Patch 7.1.5 brings some exciting changes for Elemental Shamans.
Important note about mastery:
- Gust of Wind – A burst of wind hurls you forward. Cooldown [

- Elemental Fusion – Flame Shock has a [

What Does This Mean for Me?
That’s a complex question which demands an equally, but hopefully more intuitive than patch 7.0/.1, complex answer. The re-orienting of our talent tree has eliminated several of the talent cascades which led to an über powerful Fire Elemental (FE) burst period due to hyper-inflated haste and the low value of mastery due to it’s lack of an interaction with FE and Earth Shock (ES). While Mastery still has no interaction with ES directly it does interact with the newly buffed Elemental Blast (EB) as well as the also newly buffed Icefury (IF). In addition to these powerful talents, Lava Burst (LvB) also received a major buff, another spell which directly benefits from Mastery and outside of Ascendance (ASC) not at all from Critical Strike.
Like previously mentioned LvB (+25%), EB (+30% and doubled secondaries) and IF (+400% initial dmg) got huge buffs. If specced into these Talents one increases the dmg portion of mastery affected casts by a fair amount. If one uses the Talent Echo of the Elements (Echo) the Lava Surge induced LvB overflow is stopped and the LvB count rises significantly. Because Lightning Bolt hasn’t been buffed yet, the damage difference between our filler and LvB became so large that LvB makes up the majority of our dmg. If one adds EB and IF again to this equation mastery wins hands down again. So, whoever missed mastery stacking and hurling many casts, rejoice; it looks like your time is back.
Another thought about EB: its secondary buffs got so huge that getting a second buff with one cast became a huge deal. Additionally, EB shares the same row with PE, which previously contributed to our want of Crit > Haste.
