Welcome to the Elemental Shaman FAQ. This FAQ will cover all the usual questions players might have about the spec.
(Click to be taken directly to the answer)
Why is mastery good now?
The majority of our damage is moving to Lava Burst, Elemental Blast, and Icefury; all of which benefit from Mastery: Elemental Overload. Along with the increased frequency of casting these spells, Elemental Blast overloads granting a second buff is a significant factor.
Why isn’t my Fire Elemental attacking?
Sometimes when you first summon your Fire Elemental, you might notice he isn’t attacking. All you need to do is make sure that his abilities on the pet bar are set to auto cast by right clicking them. They should have a sparkling border swirling around them.
Should I turn off Fire Elemental’s AOE for Single Target?
Yes. You can do so by right clicking on the pet bar spell Fire Nova. Make sure it does not have a sparkling border around it. There is a macro at the bottom of this FAQ to automatically cast Fire Nova back when you begin to AOE.
Does Earthquake stack?
Yes. Earthquake stacks and has no limit on the number of stacks, provided you can keep casting it.
When should I start using Earthquake instead of Earth Shock?
This answer depends on your Legendaries. Usually you will start using Earthquake at 3+ targets, however with Echoes of the Great Sundering it is usually more beneficial to continue to use Earth Shock on 3 target situations unless under periods of significantly increased Haste and the mobs will stand in the Earthquake for the full duration.Without the legendary shoulders or boots, it is safe to use Earthquake on 3 targets in most situations. Remember that Earthquake scales with Haste, so during periods of significant Haste increases, it will be beneficial to use Earthquake on 2 targets although the damage increase is small. Do not use Earthquake on 1 or 2 targets if you have The Deceiver’s Blood Pact.
Also note that with Seismic Storm, use EQ on 2 or more targets at all times.
What is the two target rotation?
Flame Shock both targets. Follow the Single Target rotation relative to your chosen talent spec but use Chain Lightning as filler after you’ve exhausted all other abilities. Spend Maelstrom with Earth Shock unless you have Seismic Storm, then you will use EQ for two targets.
I don’t have any Legendaries. Which build out of the three should I choose?
This comes down to personal preference, raid progression and player skill. If you enjoy complex rotations, the Icefury/Elemental Blast build will perform well however Icefury is simming the lowest once t19 set is obtained. If you do not want an overly complex rotation, the Ascendance and Lightning Rod builds are simming highest and will provide you with good Single Target and great/amazing cleave or AOE.
All in all, all three builds are close enough that you can play what you enjoy in most situations even without legendaries. We recommend Ascendance for pure Single Target, LR for anything cleave or AOE and Icefury for high movement.
Why aren’t there any Pawn strings for the new builds?
Pawn strings are character-specific. Using someone else’s Pawn string is like wearing a suit that was fitted for someone else; you can wear it, but you may be uncomfortable or look funny. We recommend simming yourself to find your own Pawn string instead. Look just below this to find out how!
What are some helpful macros?
This macro also uses the Primal Fire Elemental’s AOE when you begin to cleave:
#showtooltip Chain Lightning
/cast Fire Nova
/cast Chain Lightning
This macro allows you to place an Earthquake at your cursor:
/cast [@cursor] Earthquake
